What is TPMS?

What is a tyre pressure monitoring system?

A tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warns you when one or more tyres is running low. Since November 2014, every new passenger car registered in the UK has had to have one, and many models from 2012 onwards have it too. It isn't compulsory on vans, but many have it.

There are two types:

  • Direct TPMS uses a small battery-powered sensor inside each wheel – usually built into the tyre valve – that reads the pressure and sends it to the car by radio.
  • Indirect TPMS has no sensors in the wheels. It uses the ABS wheel-speed sensors to spot a tyre turning faster than the others because it's losing air.

Direct sensors are the ones that fail: their batteries last around five to ten years and can't be replaced on their own, and the valves can corrode or be damaged when tyres are changed.

TPMS and your MOT

On cars first used from 1 January 2012, a TPMS warning light that shows a system fault is a major MOT failure – so it's worth getting it fixed before your test. A light that's simply warning of low pressure isn't a fail, but it still needs checking.

Why is my tyre pressure light on?

Always check your tyre pressures first – if the light stays on or keeps coming back, one of these is usually the cause.

  • Low pressure or a slow puncture The system is doing its job – check and inflate all four tyres.
  • Flat sensor battery Sensors last around 5–10 years; a flashing light is a common sign.
  • Damaged or corroded sensor Often from a kerb strike, road salt or a previous tyre change.
  • Not reprogrammed After new wheels, a tyre swap or a new sensor, the car must relearn the sensors.
  • Winter wheels without sensors A second set of wheels needs its own sensors or the light will come on.
  • System fault Less often, a fault with the receiver or the car's software.
How we fix it

TPMS repair, replacement & reprogramming

No need to go back to the main dealer – give us a call today.

  1. Check & read

We check the pressures and use a TPMS tool to read every sensor and find the faulty one.

  2. Diagnose

Flat battery, damaged valve or programming? We tell you what's wrong and what's needed.

  3. Replace or service

We fit a new sensor, or a valve service kit if the sensor itself is healthy.

  4. Program & relearn

The new sensor is programmed and the car relearns it, so the warning light goes out.

TPMS questions

Warning light on?

Call the workshop – Mon–Fri 9am–5pm · Sat–Sun closed.

Can I drive with the TPMS light on?
Check your tyre pressures straight away – the light may be warning you about a puncture. If the pressures are right and the light stays on, the system has a fault: the car is safe to drive carefully, but you won't be warned about a real pressure loss, and it can fail the MOT on cars from 2012.
How long do TPMS sensors last?
Typically five to ten years. The battery is sealed inside the sensor, so when it runs out the whole sensor is replaced.
Do new sensors need programming?
Yes. Each sensor has its own ID that the car has to learn. We program the new sensor and carry out the relearn, so the light goes out before you leave.
